Subject:  Nebraska Legislature declares “Alexa Check” Day, May 19, 2005.

Nebraska State Senator, Jeanne Combs (Dist. 32, Milligan) will proclaim, Thursday, May 19, 2005, as “Alexa Check” day honoring Alexa Foster, who died May 19, 2004, in Crete, Nebraska.   The “Alexa Check” honors the memory of Alexa Christine Foster.  Alexa was a beautiful, vibrant child whose life was tragically taken when a concrete block wall collapsed on her in the restroom of a city park in Crete, Nebraska on May 19, 2004.

Alexa Christine Foster was born on October 8, 1995, to Roger and Julie Foster. She had an older sister Jasmine, and a younger sister, Brooke.  Alexa was an active little girl, always on the go.  Alexa attended St. James Catholic School in Crete, Nebraska.

May 19, 2004, was the last day of Alexa’s third grade. As tradition goes, their private school had their end of year picnic that evening at the city park.  At the end of the year picnic, there are always many activities with young and older children alike simply being kids.  Alexa and her friends were doing just that. They were in the women’s restroom, filling up their water guns for a water gun fight, when a cinderblock wall collapsed on Alexa. Alexa died from her injuries on May 19, 2004, on her last day of 3rd grade, when she was 8 years old.

The mission of the “Alexa Check” is to create awareness of unsafe conditions in public places.  We assume that "someone" is responsible for making the public areas where our children visit safe.  Many times, this is not the case.  The “Alexa Check” is a safety check that anyone can do.  We encourage people to perform The “Alexa Check” everywhere they go.  If you find an unsafe condition, you have an obligation to report it to the proper authorities immediately!

The “Alexa Check” means that you pay close attention to your surroundings. You inspect the areas where your children play. You go out of your way to visit the bathrooms, locker rooms, playground equipment and other areas where they hang out. Most importantly, you ACT when you see something that is unsafe, or potentially unsafe. Not only do you act, but you do whatever you have to do to make sure things get fixed.  Following the advice of Nebraska’s State Motto…“The salvation of the state is the watchfulness in the citizen”.
